ROAD DESIGN TO OPTIMISE EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY
Minister of Road Transport and Highways has Indicated that India will be adding 30 KM of New Road per day to road inventory which is a 10 fold increase from current 3 KM per day. Now central government has started clearing many highway projects, preparation of New National Highways and Improvement of Urban and Rural Road under Pradhanmanthri Gram Sadak Yogaja is getting developed all over India. Proper Road design is one of the major challenges that comes up while starting a new road project or Improvement of Existing Road (Road widening project).
What is Road design?:
The geometric design of roads is the branch of highway engineering concerned with the positioning of the physical elements of the roadway according to standards and constraints. The basic objectives in geometric design are to optimize efficiency and safety while minimizing cost and environmental damage. Geometric roadway design can be broken into three main parts: alignment, profile, and cross-section. Combined, they provide a three-dimensional layout for a roadway.
